SLUB (DEPUIS 2000) DAVE GRIFFITHS, ALEX MCLEAN, ADRIAN WARD (SLUB)

The practice of live coding consists of live concerts live at which the music comes from the live programming of computer codes. Whereas computer programming is generally considered a rather austere activity, unsuited to any kind of improvisation, this format exploits the tension between performance and coding.

Slub (Adrian Ward, Alex McLean, Dave Griffiths : livecode trio) the band describes itself as a livecode trio. They reject modern software and electronic instruments, taking a much more radical approach: improvising music by writing computer programs in real time, in front of a live audience.

Dave Griffiths is a member of Slub. He received an early training in weaving, bell ringing and 8bit computers. He is now dedicated to changing the world with free software, live animation and noise. He works as a self-employed artist/programmer and creates installations and open source software. He teaches workshops around the themes of games, music and the lisp programming language.

Alex McLean is a member of Slub, PhD student at the St Goldsmiths College and Research Assistant at the University of Sheffield. He co-organises the “Dorkbot” meetings, where people do strange things with electricity. He helps run the runme.org software art repository, and is co-founder of the ChordPunch record label, promoting algorithmic music for ears and feet.

Adrian Ward is a member of Slub, a part-time software artist and technical director of a company specialising in software for interactive experiences. For eight years he ran Signwave, an eclectic software company, using it as an excuse to do whatever he felt, whenever he liked, but had to get a proper job once he got a mortgage. He did Grade 4 on the trumpet, and still enjoys the occasional weird electronic noise.
