Stan Douglas

From 27 October 2026 to 09 January 2027

Jeu de Paume – Paris

The title of the work is borrowed from Dario Argento’s 1977 horror film, renowned for its rich, saturated palette, characteristic of Technicolor in its later years. For Suspiria, presented as an installation at Documenta 11, Stan Douglas set up computer-controlled surveillance cameras to film the labyrinthine corridors of the Hercules, the colossal octagonal tower erected in Kassel in the early eighteenth century and crowned by an imposing statue of the ancient hero.

Voici une version anglaise fluide, dans un registre adapté à un texte d’exposition :

The stream of black-and-white images is overlaid with short scenes previously filmed with actors in Vancouver, drawn from the tales of the Brothers Grimm. Drawing on these tales and on the work of Karl Marx—both German authors belonging to two successive generations—the work speaks the language of spectres, spells, and metamorphoses.

The Brothers Grimm tell stories in which social relations are permeated by magical forces capable of transforming the course of people’s lives. Marx, meanwhile, opens The Communist Manifesto with an ominous phrase: “A spectre is haunting Europe,” and introduces figures from the realm of fantasy into Capital, describing commodities as though they were endowed with a life of their own.

Douglas brings these two traditions together, not to illustrate either one, but to place them in tension and unsettle them through their encounter. Suspiria thus offers, above all, a philosophical reflection on the failure of modernism: transformation always appears possible, yet is perpetually deferred.
