Free Music – an electroacoustic improvisation by Fanny Lasfargues (electric acoustic bass) and Damon Locks (voice, electronics).
A proposal by Alexandre Pierrepont, anthropologist and director of The Bridge.
Chicago-based visual artist Damon Locks is also a musician in his very richly occupied spare time. At the microphones and machines, he is the devil himself, or the trickster: the teller of fortunes, of hard truths, of the four points of the compass. Not only his own, but those of an entire people, an entire humanity—the truths that interfere with those passing over the airwaves. On electroacoustic bass, Fanny Lasfargues is a rugged and irreverent improviser, one of the most prominent and widely heard figures on the European creative music scene. She lifts music from the earth of sounds and noises, spinning her strings like propellers. Together, they form an unclassifiable duo, fiercely and fabulously practiced in crossing mirrors and worlds.
Double bassist, bassist, improviser and composer, Fanny Lasfargues is based in Marseille. A visual artist, singer and musician, teacher and activist, Damon Locks has been a prominent figure on Chicago’s artistic scene since the late 1980s.
The two artists met in Chicago in 2022 through The Bridge, a programme dedicated to fostering connections between jazz and improvised-music musicians and facilitating exchanges between continents. Numerous collaborations between France and Chicago followed.
