On the fringe of the everyday
Notes towards another history of contemporary video in Columbia.Discussions and projections
From 01 to 02 December 2017
Jeu de Paume – Paris
These two days of screenings and dialogues offer explore new work from Columbia in the field of the moving image. Curated by Ximena Gama Chirolla, the project brings together videos by Marcos Ávila Forero, Elkin Calderón, Juan Fernando Herrán, Laura Huertas Millán, Ana María Millán and Sandra Rengifo plus a performance by Laura Huertas. Discussions with the artists will help visitors gain a better understanding of their approaches and, more generally, of the context for video work in Columbia.
The videos chosen by philosopher Ximena Gama Chirolla reveal figures or landscapes that are, in one way or another, outside the norms. In choosing to represent these micro-histories, the artists are addressing the issues linked to the colonization of traditional know-how and, at the same time, taking an interest in the repercussions of the economic dynamics driven b globalization on certain social and political structures in Latin America.
Whether documentaries or experimental works, these pieces interrogate the way of representing “non-disciplined” lives located on the edge of conventions.
The projections will be followed by conversations with the guest artists in order to give listeners a better understanding of their artistic and conceptual approaches.
