Jeu de Paume – Paris
Jeu de Paume and Éditions Empire are delighted to invite you to a discussion with artist Yonatan Vinitsky to celebrate the publication of his book Le Milieu Du Monde – The Middle Of The World. Yonatan Vinitsky will talk about his work with François Havegeer and Sacha Léopold, who are graphic designers, publishers and founders of Éditions Empire and the Syndicat studio.
Inspired by the famous “images à coller” picture books, Le Milieu Du Monde – The Middle Of The World is a cross between an artist’s book and a documentary work about art, a large volume containing a collection of nearly 300 pre-glued images.
This book by Yonatan Vinitsky explores the studios of fourteen artists who have influenced him, as both a budding and established artist: Absalon, Yaacov Agam, Alexander Calder, Marc Chagall, Lygia Clark, Naum Gabo, Rupprecht Geiger, Matt Montini, Bruno Munari & Leo Lionni, Ezra Orion, Chana Orloff, David Perlov, Dorothea Rockburne. Like a new production centre, the book creates a relationship between the contributions of over 40 artists, writers, designers, architects, photographers, etc. The project is built around new works, with no archive documents. These are a mix of performance, illustration, painting, sculpture, digitisation and other experiments that examine and activate the subject and the place of the artist’s studio today.

Yonatan Vinitsky is a Polish-Israeli artist based in Haifa (Israel) and London, where he studied at Goldsmiths College and the Royal College of Art. He is represented by the Limoncello gallery in London and Frutta in Rome. Using painting, photography, publishing and sculpture, he focuses on the reproduction of all kinds of found objects, paying particular attention to original techniques and materials. In this way he draws attention to the importance of certain artistic choices that precede and characterise the work.
Sacha Léopold and François Havegeer are graphic designers and publishers and the founders of the new bilingual journal FAIRE. Committed to an analytical, critical approach to the forms and activities of design, their publication documents international contemporary practices and the history and grammar of styles, and is aimed at undergraduate students as well as at researchers and art professionals.
