Florence Lazar: “Les Bosquets”

Screening followed by a discussion with the artist and Giovanna Zapperi and Sandra Parvu

Friday 29 March 2019 • 6:30 PM

Jeu de Paume – Paris

On the occasion of its Florence Lazar exhibition, Jeu de Paume will be screening in the auditorium the films not shown in the galleries.

Les Bosquets, a film from 2010, will be shown at this first evening devoted to the subjects of urbanism, the territory and speech/gesture in public space. The screening will be followed by a discussion with art historian Giovanna Zapperi, and Sandra Parvu, a lecturer at ENSA Paris-Val de Seine, together with Florence Lazar.

Les Bosquets is the bucolic name of a public housing estate in Montfermeil. It is late spring, and life seems slow. At the foot of the rundown tower blocks, among the renovation work, some are playing cards while, further off, women are talking on the lawn. This unexpected tranquillity, underscored by long wide shots, holds in check our ready judgements about these outer suburbs so stigmatised on the news. By filming the housing project as a landscape bathed in light, without dramatizing the obvious idleness of the inhabitants, and letting the microphone catch what is said, pick up the clues to a situation, hearing what suddenly happens out of frame, Florence Lazar discreetly asks the question: “What does it mean to be here?”

“The film is set among the ongoing building work around the territory of Clichy Montfermeil, the biggest demolition and renovation project so far announced in all the major housing projects in France. Each group of characters, the women and men, embody the symbolic functions that will construct the dramaturgy of the film. These figures have a singular vision of these spaces. The film is built on a heterogeneity of registers of speech and gesture.” (F. Lazar)
