Meeting with Todd Hido and Jordan Alves
The Dead Are Glad to Be Remembered
Sunday 16 November 2025 • 11:30 AM
Jeu de Paume – Paris
Jeu de Paume Bookshop and Atelier EXB are delighted to invite you to the launch of Todd Hido’s new book, The Dead Are Glad to Be Remembered.
A discussion between Todd Hido and Jordan Alves, the book’s editor, will follow. The conversation will be conducted entirely in English, with no French translation.
The Book
Between an artist’s book and a scrapbook album, The Dead Are Glad to Be Remembered—signed and numbered in an edition of 500—invites readers to wander through the work of Todd Hido in dialogue with his collection of vernacular photography. Each page of the album unfolds a new narrative composed by the artist, with the collaboration of his wife, Marina Luz, deliberately left open to interpretation.
The book brings together a selection of portraits, urban houses, and landscapes—both previously unseen and iconic—interwoven with postcards, vintage book covers and film posters, old amateur portraits, drawings, photo booth images, and more. Found photography is presented in all its material richness. Genres intertwine to create a singular work that plays with shifting atmospheres around themes of desire, solitude, memory, the unconscious, and the subconscious—hallmarks of Hido’s practice. These themes are also explored in an essay by writer Brad Zellar at the heart of the book, who reflects on them through fragments of experience and narrative interspersed with literary quotations.
Signed and numbered edition of 500 copies – €185
Speakers
Todd Hido is an American artist known for his evocative imagery—anonymous houses at night, urban landscapes, neglected interiors, and melancholic figures. His photographs, often described as cinematic, suggest an implicit narrative open to the viewer’s interpretation. His work was recently exhibited at the 2025 Rencontres d’Arles. He lives and works in Oakland and teaches at the California College of the Arts in San Francisco.
Jordan Alves is editor, partner, and co-director at Atelier EXB.
