French preview of the film by Carlos Pazos, with the artist

Tuesday 04 December 2018 • 6:30 PM

Jeu de Paume – Paris

Art¡ss!mo (Spain, 2015, B/W and colour, Spanish with Fr. subtitles, 135 minutes) is a film of quotations, a collage to be read, bringing together fragments from over 800 films, from Méliès to the time of the project’s completion in October 2015. In this work, Carlos Pazos sets out to present the vision of contemporary art conveyed by cinema, which is nearly always stereotyped, and in particular its vision of visual arts and literature.

Carlos Pazos (Barcelona, 1949) is an iconoclastic artist who is inspired by Conceptual and Pop art. His installations, performances and audiovisual works are a mixture of denunciation, transgression, burlesque and obscenity. Holder of a degree in architecture and design, he put on his first exhibition in 1970. In the 1980s he made collages and other two- and three-dimensional works that combined unreal worlds and everyday objects. In 2004 he won Spain’s National Arts Award Prix and in 2008 he had a major retrospective at the MACBA in Barcelona and the Museo Reina Sofia in Madrid, going back over his artistic career and highlighting key themes in his work such as identity and the poetics of objects.

After the film there will be a discussion between the artist and the film critic and curator Dominique Païni, followed by a signing session for the book Art¡ss!mo in the Jeu de Paume bookshop.
