Jeu de Paume – Paris

The life of the “sweet children of poverty” in Aubervilliers in the immediate post-war years, with a commentary by Jacques Prévert.

Commissioned by the communist municipality of Aubervilliers, this poetic and political film places considerable emphasis on the inadequacy of workers’ housing and points out that the “ruins of war” have merely added to “the ruins of poverty.”

Programmed as of February 1946 with La Bataille du rail (René Clément, 1946) and Le Voleur de paratonnerre (1946, a cartoon by Paul Grimault, screenplay by Jacques Prévert), Aubervilliers was taken off the screens at weekends so as not to upset families. For many years the film was distributed by production and distribution companies close to the French Communist Party.

Screening of the film “Aubervilliers” by Eli Lotar (1945, 25’, VF).
Tuesday 14 March from 6.30 to 7 pm in the Jeu de Paume auditorium.
Admission free.
