Shrimp Chicken Fish
2010, digital, colour, sound, 5 mins

The BLVD
1999, digital, colour, sound, 64 mins

Two homages by the artist to the city of Chicago, its port, the 95th Street drawbridge, a seafood fast-food restaurant, as well as the roads, carparks, and garages in the city centre. Both real and fictional characters revolve around its automobile culture: the Blues Brothers in the short film Shrimp Chicken Fish, and urban drag racing enthusiasts in The BLVD. At nightfall, the latter can be seen driving their vehicles at full speed amidst the fumes and din. Filmed in mini-DV, The BLVD addresses the myth of speed, as much as the time of waiting, during which the artist presents a supportive and enthusiastic community. Without hiding the shared emotional connection between her and her subjects, Stratman merges political and social commitments, a love of detail, and a taste for beauty.
