The austere beauty of Iceland’s landscapes contrasts with the plaintive, caustic tone of the letters written there by a young Hetty during a trip at the beginning of the century with other friends and their school principal, opposing the banality of tourism with the forces of nature. Kuyenda N’kubvina explores the way in which thought and culture are disseminated in Malawi, through visits to video clubs, bookstores, and radio stations in various towns and villages. Vever (for Barbara) combines images shot by Barbara Hammer in Guatemala in 1975 with a telephone conversation with the filmmaker who died in 2019, with notes and recordings made by Maya Deren in Haiti for her unfinished film Divine Horsemen, thus weaving a link between three filmmakers with shared aspirations.
