Jeu de Paume – Paris
Éditions Manuella and Jeu de Paume are pleased to invite you to a presentation of the multi-author work Photogénie de l’exposition with Rémi Parcollet and Michel Poivert.
By definition ephemeral, when an exhibition of artworks ends it is recalled only by catalogues and archives. Among these archives, exhibition views play a singular and decisive role.
Many works are known to the public only via their photographic image (when it is not the photograph itself that replaces their memory). This phenomenon raises some very big questions in the field of visual studies, touching on the polysemous nature of artworks, on the memory of what we see and on the patrimonialization of works in an exhibition, but also the way art history is written and even the evolution of artistic practices. This book considers the current status of exhibition view photographs and looks at their complex documentary function. As both archive and medium or representation, they are more than just records of what has been; within the postmodern context they become artistic and curatorial tools.
