Photography as revolt

From 04 December 2026 to 23 May 2027

Jeu de Paume – Tours

Stanley Greene never abandoned the side of revolt, denouncing domination and violence through his reports, books, exhibitions, and films. Establishing himself as an emblematic figure of committed photography, he crafted his own mythology to better serve the causes he had become a spokesperson for, fully inhabiting his romantic persona with sincerity—making it difficult to disentangle narrative from exact fact. His autobiography, Black Passport, portrays his life like a film full of twists and turns. Yet he remained a journalist attentive to the ethical demands of his profession and to the necessity of producing reliable, precisely documented images for publication in the press, before they became part of his larger, almost epic narrative. His vast photographic output bears witness to his pursuit of justice alongside marginalized and oppressed people.
