The Economy of Living Things: a chorus

In an effort to address the instability of our present and political moment, the Satellite 10 exhibition program, curated by Osei Bonsu and entitled “The Economy of Living Things” explores the interconnected movements of humans, animals, plants, artefacts and other cultural products across real and imagined boarders.

To broaden the scope of this exhibition program, this one-day symposium will address the topics of changing mentalities, post-colonial memory, utopian imagination, and ecological transformation in relation to art.

Centred around screenings of new commissions by Ali Cherri, Steffani Jemison, Jumana Manna and Oscar Murillo, this symposium will bring together specialists from fields as diverse as sociology, cultural studies and political science. While allowing for an interdisciplinary debate around these works, the symposium is focused on the moving image’s role in the making of the discourses on history, its politics as a documentary form and its potential as a new critical space.

In a moment when social and political action has become synonymous with living, how can we think the act of artistic production? To what extent can we trace the historical transactions of migration and movement in our present-day reality? How do we account for the vulnerability of lives threatened by processes of erasure and extinction?

12h30 – 13h30: Conversation with Françoise Vergès, Chair of Global South(s) at the Collège d’études mondiales, Fondation Maison des sciences de l’homme, Paris and the artist Oscar Murillo, with, in the background, the screening of Untitled / Mercantile Novel (59 ‘) by Oscar Murillo.

15h00 – 15h45: Conversation with Rizvana Bradley, Assistant Professor of Film and Media Studies and African American Studies, Yale University, and the artist Steffani Jemison.

16h00 – 16h30: Conversation of the artist with Shela Sheikh, professor of postcolonial studies.
