Jeu de Paume – Paris

Born in 1941 in the UK, Victor Burgin is an artist and theorist. This exhibition of his work covers over fifty years of artistic activity and includes early conceptual works, still photo-text works from the 1970s and 1980s, and video works dating from 2006 to 2023.

In formal terms, Burgin’s works explore relations between still photographic and moving images and words, most often in their narrative functions, the artist thus reflects on related representational codes. Although his works are rooted in everyday reality, Burgin’s main and most constant concern is the psychological space where perceptions of the physical world merge with memory and fantasy.

The exhibition at Jeu de Paume features a selection of works from the 1970s-1980s, when Burgin worked with black and white photography, as well as works from the past two decades, when he starts to work with video. It will include some of his most recent works made with a “game engine” – software originally designed to create video games.
