Willy Ronis at the Monnaie de Paris

From 16 April to 22 August 2010

Jeu de Paume – Paris

To mark the centenary of his birth, Jeu de Paume, La Monnaie de Paris and the Médiathèque de l’Architecture et du Patrimoine are paying homage to Willy Ronis (Paris, 1910-2009) with an exhibition of some 150 photographs (a mixture of vintage prints and modern prints supervised by the photographer) featuring all the images that secured his place in the history of photography as well as many that have never been shown before.

“My photographs are not an attempt to overcome death and I’m not aware of suffering any existential anxiety. I don’t even know where I’m going, except forward – more or less fortuitously – to the things or people that I love, that interest me or disconcert me.” For Willy Ronis photography was not an end in itself but a way of expressing his personal experience of social reality. Whether taken in the street, in a factory, in the countryside or in intimate settings, his photographs constitute a series of moments sampled from life, the foundation of his own version of the real.

Exhibition coproduced by Jeu de Paume
